Mom's Night Out

Just a reminder that we will be having a Mom's Night Out this Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at the Starbucks in Alabaster (the one on 119). This is simply a time to get together to fellowship with other Moms in a casual atmosphere. These are always great fun so we hope you'll be able to make it!

Here are the rest of the dates for this year so that you can mark them on your calendar. They will always be at Starbucks on 119 unless otherwise indicated. Also, these are coordinated by Melissa Jeffers, so if you have any questions, you can email her at: melissajeffers@bellsouth.net Thank you so much, Melissa!

Mom's Night Out Dates:

April 3

April 17- This coincides with the Joe Wheeler campout, but if anyone is interested, you can contact Melissa to let her know if you would commit to being there.

May 8

May 29- at Melissa's house (last one of the year)

We will send out an email reminder each time and we will include the directions to Melissa's as the time draws nearer. Have a great week!

HCS-6 Second Semester Field Trips

Hello Families!
Here you will find our field trip opportunities for the upcoming semester. We don't have one for the month of February, and I do apologize for that. I planned for 2 different places, but neither of them worked out. However, we do have Play Days (see post below this one) and Mom's Night Out scheduled, so we still have a chance for fellowship.

Please check the Field Trip Guidelines post (click the words for a direct link) if you are not familiar with our procedures regarding payment, sign-up requirements, ect.

Tour of Vulcan Museum
Vulcan Park and Museum is home to the world's largest cast iron statue and features spectacular views of Birmingham. They will tell the story of Birmingham's past, present and promise for the future. This is a docent led tour through the museum and into the statue (I think...I'm not exactly sure if it is IN or AROUND the actual statue, but it will be interesting).
Here is a direct link to their website: Vulcan Park

The details of this field trip are as follows:

Date: Friday, March 27, 2009
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Location: Birmingham, AL Click here for directions from I-65 in Calera: Mapquest
Ages: All

We do need a minimum of 10 in order to get the discounted price. Also, they did caution me that we will be up high while on the Vulcan Observation Balcony (only one part of the tour) and that this could be hard on those with a fear of heights, so please be aware that this is a factor.

Tour of Helen Keller's Birthplace
Come and tour the home and grounds of one of the most amazing women in our State's history. On the website, you can find a full biography and other educational tools to learn about this wonderful lady, prior to our trip, who overcame so much. Here is a direct link: Ivy Green

This field trip has been highly raved about by others who have been on it, so it should be excellent! Also, we will have a campout that weekend (see below), but it is not required that you do both.

Campout at Joe Wheeler Park
This is a campout that we are combining with a field trip since the Helen Keller museum is so far away. You do not have to participate in both things though. This state park offers boating, fishing, trails and more! The pictures on the website are beautiful and you can see those and any other information here: Joe Wheeler State Park

The details of this trip are as follows:

When: They are scheduled for the 3rd Friday of every month for continuity, (except for the one in April, because it conflicts with the Helen Keller field trip/campout). They will start at 1:30 p.m. and end whenever the last person leaves.

The dates are:

American Village Field Trip Pictures!

Here are some pictures that I snapped during our recent trip to the American Village.
What a sweet time we had!
Enjoy...

If you have any HCS-6 pictures that you would like to have posted, please feel free to email them to me!

Just a few things....

Hello HCS-6 Families!

There are a few important things that I wanted to put out there before our upcoming meeting in 2 weeks (Tuesday, January 27, at the School Office. Start time is 1:00)....

The first thing, is that one of our field trips, scheduled for April, is to the birth place of Helen Keller in Tuscumbia, Alabama (more details on that at the meeting). We were hoping to combine that with an HCS-6 campout for that weekend up at Joe Wheeler State Park. However, we've never actually been there, so I was hoping that some of you had.

If that applies to you, would you mind shooting me (Gayle) an email at westiecrew6@gmail.com or leaving a comment beneath this post? Thanks so much!

Secondly, after speaking with several of you, we have been tossing around an idea for beginning a mentoring program within HCS-6. What that means, is that we would like a way to connect the newer homeschoolers with the more seasoned ones in order to offer guidance, advice, and all around support. The problem is that we have no brilliant ideas about how to pull that off logistically. SO, that's where we'd like for you to come in. Here are a couple of questions:

1. Would this be something that would interest you whether as a mentor or the....ummmm....ment-ee? ment-ed? Person Begging ForMercy? ;)

2. How would you think this would be best be offered? As a Mom'sNight Out? On an assignment basis (ex: Beulah is over Bertha, Petunia and Bessie)? Something else?

Inquiring minds need to know, so please shoot me an email, comment, or bring your suggestions to the meeting on the 27th.

Lastly, we are offering a semi-last minute opportunity for fellowship in the form of a Mom's Night Out this Friday, January 16. We will be meeting at Starbucks in Alabaster at 7 p.m. and we would love for you to join us! No need to RSVP because this is just a casual "come if you're able".

Thanks for all of your help and we look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks (if not sooner)!
